Lauki, also called bottle gourd, long melon, dhoodhi/dudhi, ghiya is a type of bottle-shaped squash with light-green smooth skin and white spongy flesh. Interestingly, as the name bottle gourd suggests, it is one of the first cultivated plants in the world that was grown not for food but as water vessels.
Lauki or bottle gourd is over 90% water therefore it is easy to digest and has many health benefits. In fact, traditional healers recommended consumption of bottle gourd to treat various conditions. Some of these benefits are: It aids digestion, helps treat urinary disorders, it’s great for weight loss, reduces stress and prevents heart desease.
CAUTION: When purchasing bottle gourd (lauki), always make sure it’s fresh and looks good for cooking. Bottle gourd if not grown properly or over a perod of time (like cucumbers, pumpkins and squashes) spoils, becomes bitter and poisonous.
